CSIR laboratories Open Day to school children are organized periodically.KVS Students and teachers in the vicinity of CSIR laboratories can visit CSIR laboratories and get the opportunity of seeing Science Lab equipment and how it is being used by the researchers.
Sponsored Programmes for School Children
Many Central govt., State Govt. sponsored programmes and other international bodies/ Society programs are operational in CSIR laboratories. Those programs can either be scaled up or replicated in other CSIR laboratories. Examples are Chief Minister, Govt. of Assam Gyan Jhyoti Programme, Gyan Yatra Programme under Rashtriya Madhyamic Shiksha Abhiyan, etc. For these programs KVS can nominate their students for active participation.
CSIR Foundation Day
CSIR Celebrates its Foundation Day on 26 September. Similarly, each CSIR laboratory celebrates its foundation day. On these occasions special programmes are organized across CSIR. School children can participate in those programs.
Important Awareness Days
(Environment Day, World Health Day, National Science Day, International Day of Chemistry, etc.)
KVS school students can participate in the CSIR celebrations on Environment Day, World Health Day, National Science Day etc. in specific CSIR campuses. The event may include lecture series, presentations, and other activities.
National Technology Day
CSIR Celebrates National Technology Day to mark CSIR contribution to the Science and Technology. especially dedication of Hansa 3, India first indigenous aircraft which was first tested on 11 May 1998 in Bangalore.
Lab specific activities/Onsite experiments
CSIR with its diverse portfolio of laboratories can provide distinct lab specific programs to school students. These programmes have to be worked out based on geographical and laboratory mandate.
Visits of Scientists to Schools / Outreach Programme
A scientist or a team of scientists can visit schools for an interactive session with the school children. The visit can also be planned on important celebrations, occasions or for a particular event.
KVs Hosted within CSIR
KVs hosted within CSIR can become a unique opportunity for CSIR-KVS Jigyasa programs. Many initiatives that are unique and path breaking may be evolved around this CSIR-KVS existing associations.
Popular Lecture/demonstration programme at School
Popular scientific lecture series by CSIR scientists with large participation of students may be organized with working models/ demonstration.
Student Apprenticeship programme
Students of class IX and class XI visit the lab where they are given lecture on the overview of the lab R&D activities followed by visits to selected departments for 3 or more days spending 3 hours per day during which they get to interact with scientists and learn the research program they are engaged in and also about the analytical facilities;
Science Exhibitions
CSIR organizes Science Exhibitions in many events and occasions. School students can visit and participate in the exhibitions wherever CSIR has presence. Further, as a joint effort, CSIR-KVS stalls can also be envisaged where scientific breakthroughs, inventions, etc. of students with the handholding of CSIR can be showcased.
Science and Maths Club
Science clubs for school children can be thought as a model for scientists and student interaction. The clubs can be instrumental in handholding of school students by scientists. Students can also associate with CSIR for taking necessary guidance for designing their science projects and documenting their project.
Teachers Workshop
A two or three day Teachers workshop can be envisaged. Teachers of a particular stream can be invited to nearby CSIR institute for apprising on the latest developments in scientific field along with hand-on demonstration wherever feasible.
Student Residential Programme
A week long (or shorter duration) residential programme can be planned for a small group of students (20-25) and two or more teachers during the breaks and vacations. The programme will help students to attend Lab and watch the scientific work in progress and learn by assisting the Lab personnel. The stay in the campus would provide ample time and opportunity to the students to get first-hand experience in scientific work and also enable them to appreciate the fundamentals of science taught to them in the classroom.
Summer Vacation Programmes
Interested school students can be chosen to attend a special summer vacation camp in select CSIR laboratories. The Labs can also organize longer summer vacation programmes wherein minor research projects can be taken-up by the students with the help of young Scientists and Research associates. Such research projects can be dovetailed with the ongoing projects in the labs.
Projects of National Childrens Science Congress
Students who are preparing science projects/ models under National Childrens Science Congress can come to CSIR institutes to take help and guidance from the scientists and technologists.
Scientists as Teachers and Teachers as Scientists
Scientists and other CSIR employees who have a flair for teaching can be associated with schools to provide a practical and lively lecture on science around you or concepts of sciences in simple form. The visit can also include minor demos wherever feasible.
Similarly, teachers from KVS who have a zeal for R&D can be motivated to pursue their research instincts with the mentorship of CSIR scientists. This will enable teachers to publish papers, articles etc. and hone their research skills. Scientists can handhold teachers in this aspect.
Publication of Student articles in CSIR Journals
School students as well as teachers will be encouraged to write articles that can be published in CSIR Journals. CSIR scientists will handhold students and teachers in this endeavour.
INTRODUCTION
"JIGYASA" is one of the major initiatives taken up by CSIR at national level, during its Platinum Jubilee Celebration Year. CSIR is widening and deepening its Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) further with the programme. On the one hand, this programme would explain the culture of curiousness and scientific nature on the other. CSIR at national level for further widening and deepening its Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) through Jigyasa programme.
Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) had signed an MoU on Scientist – Student Connect programme ‘Jigyasa’ on 6th July, 2017. The CSIR’s Jigyasa program is a unique platform for bringing scientists and teachers for nurturing young minds. This program envisages opening up the national scientific facilities to school children, enabling CSIR scientific knowledgebase and facility to be utilized by schoolchildren. This model of engaging school children also has been extended to other schools in addition to KVS. The Jigyasa programme envisages some of the following models of engagement:
Laboratory Visit;
Popular Lecture Series;
Summer Vacation Programmes;
Scientists as Teachers and Teachers as Scientists;
Teachers’ Workshop;
Student Residential Programme
Visits of Scientists to Schools
Lab specific activities / Onsite experiments and many more.
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has launched a student-scientist connect programme 'JIGYASA' in collaboration with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathans (KVS); the sole objective of which is extending the classroom leaning and focusing on a well planned research laboratory based learning.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE JIGYASA PROGRAM
'JIGYASA' would inculcate the culture of inquisitiveness on one hand and scientific temper on the other, amongst the school students and their teachers.
In JIGYASA program Student learn theoretical concepts with practical experiments and presentation. They easily understand and grab the important concept behind that topic. Also, they are curious to know more about the topic and its basic principle. This program motivates student how they can choose science as career option and student show their interest to know more about the benefits and career opportunity in science field.
